artist statement

Liz Jaite
2011

My paintings are a fabrication of fictional and non-fictional places and events that coalesce into a complex network of compositional circumstances. I draw inspiration from maps and video games. I intentionally layer my paintings with information that suggests a sense of pictorial space overflowing with rural and urban topography and architecture, while at the same time I introduce glitches (a fault or defect) to disrupt any logical reading a viewer may have of the image. There is no intended life, death, or high score in the work. The experience is based on a disconnect between the landscape imagery and habitual exploration.
