Janet Echelman - Taking Imagination Seriously
Janet's talk was very inspiring. I enjoyed her sincerity and her humor. She was also wearing a purple scarf around her neck that she made out of her nets she uses for her pieces. Janet went through a lot of trial and elimination to get to where she is today. She started out as a painter and ended up as a sculptor. Her sculptures still reflect the painting techniques used in her paintings. Janet wants to be challenged and after losing all her paints on her way over seas to India, she got her challenge. She had to set up for a huge show. After trying the town's local bronze casting, she began to use fish nets. Her fish net sculptures are amazingly huge and give you this sense of being captured and sheltered. Her first permanent one in is in Portugal and has a talk on TED.
